Abstract. In the current paper, there has been conducted a historical and legal analysis of C. F. Adams’s historical work “Erie Milestones” to discover traces of the development of corrupt relations in the field of railroad construction in the United States in the second half of the 19th century. There have been considered the forms of illegal corruption described by the officials of Railroad Company “Erie”, including the bribery of legislators in Albany and corruption in the New York State courts. There have been highlighted how Adams’s public condemnation of corruption laid the foundation for subsequent anti-corruption reforms in the transportation industry.
